Jars of Clay sent me an update on some of their class options. One is specifically tailored to homeschoolers. Check it out:
Playwriting is an exciting and engaging way to learn about performing arts and scriptwriting. To be successful, you need to know where ideas for plays come from, the lingo writers speak, how to create fully dimensional characters, how to write dialogue, where to start your play, how to develop your storyline and reach the story’s climax, and how to bring your play to a satisfying conclusion.
If you want to explore script writing and learn script writing this class is for you. The skills you learn in this class will help you write better stories, better dialogue and be useful in many other writing areas. This class is not just for writers, anyone with an interest in any aspect of performing will benefit from learning about the aspects of writing and storytelling techniques that will be presented. An experienced team of writers, directors, actors and designers, from Prescott Center for the Arts, will
teach this class. The team has years of experience working with elementary and secondary students. The goal of the class will be to guide students through the process of writing, revising and producing their work. Students will be encouraged to submit their plays for Prescott Center for the Arts Young Playwrights Festival. They will also learn about additional opportunities to submit their work for scholarships or other playwriting competitions. In the spring, a special festival production opportunity will be given to all writers who wish to take their play to the next step of performance.
This course will meet once a week for 2 hours for a total of twelve weeks. Additional work out of class will be encouraged and required for students to achieve the best results with their writing. (Students should plan to spend an average of 2 hours per week outside of class working on assignments and their play script.)
Students will understand the structure of a story and the structure of a theatrical script.
Students will learn how to fully develop a character for a play or story.
Students will learn to write dialogue that helps convey and move a story forward.
Students will write and revise a 10-minute script that will not exceed 10 pages.
Students will learn to submit writing for competitive opportunities.
Students, who desire, will participate in the process of bringing their writing to life for a showcase performance.

Yavapai College is offering scholarship auditions THIS WEEK for students in their musical programs. What does this have to do with homeschoolers? Well, high school students participating in Yavapai College musical programs can also apply. And that includes homeschoolers. But you’ll have to think quickly. Auditions are on:
Sign up for the auditions by following this link to the Yavapai College sign up form.
Also, you can click on the link below to see the flyer for more detailed information:
I received this email from a music teacher at Yavapai College. He and his wife are reaching out to teach private instrumental and voice lessons to homeschoolers. Please take a look at the many other options he is offering! Maybe something will work out for your child (or yourself?)! While some of this is time sensitive, other options may be available in the future, too (for families whose kids aren’t in HS yet).
Here is a quick rundown of what he is offering:
- Private lessons for low brass instrument (tuba, trombone, baritone)
- Private voice lessons
- College credit for music lessons for HS students
- Auditions for Music scholarships on April 3rd ($$$ to pay for music lessons)
- Participate in college bands for free: Collegiate Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra
