5th & 6th Grade Book Clubs @ Prescott Public Library

The Prescott Public Library is hosting a couple of book clubs this school year for 5th and 6th graders.

“Registered participants will be given their own personal copies of books under discussion. The books, as well as snacks and other materials, are funded through the Friends of Prescott Public Library, an organization of volunteers. Both book clubs will begin meeting in September.

“The Newbery Book Club, centering on titles that have earned the highest literary distinction, will be meeting every fourth Tuesday at 4 p.m.

“I am excited about the Newbery books that we will be discussing this year. Many of them are older books, which I have found to deliver worthwhile morals in a clear, direct manner. Some of these books include insights into the ways of life of homeless persons; the development of strong character, summoned to make good choices and to defend others with disadvantages.

“Others of the books share stories that promote understanding of our country’s recent history, including the experiences of African Americans before and during Civil Rights movements.

“The specific book titles can be previewed here: Newbery Book Club.

“The second book club for this age group, the Graphic Noves Club, will meet every second Tuesday at 4 p.m. Graphic novels have come into their own as a legitimate literary format in our increasingly visual world. The assortment of titles for this group runs the gamut from funny (The Last Kids on Earth) to sensitive (Awkward), and from thought-provoking (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) to eye-opening (Drowned City). The lineup for this club can be previewed here: Graphic Novels Club.

“To register, please call the library’s Youth Services desk at 928-777-1537; stop by the Youth Services desk; or sign up online by going to the library’s events calendar and clicking on the name of the book club that you are interested in. The calendar is accessible from the library’s web site (www.prescottlibrary.info).

“Thank you so much for considering my request.

Best regards,

Steve Ryan
